Terrorist tactics – new strategies in terrorism and possible cyber terrorism.
How is technology affecting terrorism? The WMD argument for the war against Iraq rested on assumptions about the possible ease that technology was having on the ability to make weapons. The WMD argument is now being used increasingly in the context of the development by North Korea of its nuclear program. What role does the UN and international law play in the anti-terrorism campaign?
Distinction between individual terrorism/state sponsored terrorism. Is it correct to attack countries that harbour terrorists? Can states be regarded as terror or rogue states? How should the world deal with “terror states”?

Terrorism profile

May 16th, 2007 · 15 Comments

The image “http://www.lib.uwo.ca/weldon/news/hottopics/archive2004/terrorism.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors. What is behind terrorism? When the planes hit the World Trade Centre towers, many raised the question, why do the terrorists hate the USA so? Many people were offended by this question. The mirror should be placed back on societies that spawn such hate filled individuals, they argued. Follow the Bali bomber trial to see individuals driven by hatred, ignorance, arrogance, bigotry, dogmatism, naivete etc, they argue.

Profile the groups involved in terrorism. Who are they? What are their goals?

List the terrorist incidents you know of.

“One Day in September”

May 6th, 2007 · 14 Comments

This program records the events of September 5, 1972 when eleven Israeli sportsmen were taken hostage and massacred by Palestinian guerrillas during the Munich Olympic Games – a tragedy broadcast live around the world. There are two narrative lines: Ankie Spitzer, the Dutch widow of one of the murdered Israelis, fencing coach Andre Spitzer; and Amal Al Gashey, the sole surviving Palestinian guerrilla. Twenty-eight years later he still presents his absolute faith in the rightness of his mission. There is also comment from a variety of eyewitnesses and from German and Israeli officials.
Answer the following questions:
What demands did the terrorists make?
Write a paragraph explaining what motivated the terrorists.
Why do you think Golda Meir refused to give in to the terrorists demands?
In your opinion, should democratic governments ever negotiate with terrorists? Why? Why not?According to Amal Al Gashey, what motivated the terrorists? What justification does he give?
How might this source be used by historians (usefulness)? How reliable is it as an historical source?

Defining Terrorism

May 6th, 2007 · 14 Comments

There has been a long debate, for some years now, over how to define terrorism. Some groups have claimed that the label “terrorist” has been used to brand many legitimate groups struggling to change their societies. For example, Nelson Mandela was called a terrorist by the White Apartheid South African regime
According to the US Dept. of Defence , terrorism is: “the unlawful use or threatened use of force or violence against people or property to coerce or intimidate governments or societies, often to achieve political, religious, or ideological objectives.”
In other words, terrorism is violence designed to advance some cause by getting a government to change its policies or political behaviour.
However, some see this definition as “western”. Iranian religious scholar, Ayatulla Taskhiri in a paper delivered at a 1987 international terrorism conference called by the Organisation of the Islamic Conference, argued a definition of terrorism as “an act carried out to achieve an inhuman and corrupt objective and involving threat to security of any kind, and in violation of the rights acknowledged by religion and mankind.”
Countries, by this definition, can be guilty of terrorism [Source: http://www.al-islam.org/al-tawhid/definition-terrorism.htm]
Research and write a definition of “terrorism” in your own words.
